The industry has seen an 86% increase in registered firms since 2014, and there are now 15,113 registered private security businesses operating across the country. The industry employs more personnel than the police and military combined, and private security firms are often the first responders to crime scenes, although they are legally limited and rely on police for further action.

The industry's growth is driven by the need for additional protection, especially as violent crime continues to climb in the country. The private security sector is also recognized for its contribution to the South African economy, with a significant role in the labor market and a high number of entry-level jobs.
