Granted R15 000 bail in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court

Dr. Syam Prabhakaran Nair of Newcastle, was arrested last week at Madadeni Hospital after a whistle-blower alerted police to complaints of him allegedly touching female patients inappropriately and forcing them to perform sexual acts on him.

He was remanded as The court requested further investigations, and bail was opposed by the prosecution.

He was granted R15 000 bail in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court this morning with strict conditions, including reporting to police twice weekly.

He first appeared in court last Thursday (April 30) for bail information purposes.

Presiding officer Magistrate Nkosi said the accused must report to Newcastle Police Station every Monday and Friday between 06:00 and 18:00. He is also prohibited from contacting or interfering with state witnesses and may not go near Madadeni Regional Hospital.

In addition, the accused may not leave KZN or South Africa while the case is ongoing.

The matter was postponed to June 26.

He intends to plead not guilty.

Police investigations are continuing.

 Tuesday 5 May 2026 #WANTED The #HAWKS members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Commercial Crime Investigation are seeking information on the whereabouts of Gugu Maria Zikalala (55), who is wanted in connection with a fraud case. In March 2015, Zikalala is alleged to have submitted a false affidavit to the Master of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, falsely claiming she was eligible for appointment as executor of the estate of the late Nqobile Minenhle Ndlovu and falsely claiming to be her biological mother. Zikalala also submitted a death certificate for the late Thulani Michael Ndlovu, the biological father of Nqobile Minenhle Ndlovu. Her application sought access to the minor’s guardian funds, amounting R243 983.09. The Hawks are appealing to the public for assistance in locating Gugu Maria Zikalala.
