The Charlene Pretorius matter continued in the Pretoria Magistrates Court over the past two days with emotional and detailed testimony from Charlene’s son, Jason Venter, during cross-examination.
Court heard about the family’s living arrangements over the years, allegations of violence in the home, drug use, previous domestic violence incidents, and conflicting versions surrounding the events leading up to Charlene’s death.
Jason testified that he himself was “disciplined with the fist” as a child and described previous incidents where he feared for his mother’s safety, including one involving a crossbow inside the home.
The defence also challenged aspects of Jason’s statements, including allegations regarding threats made after Stephan Pretorius was apprehended on the highway, the positioning of vehicles at the scene, and claims surrounding Charlene’s relationship with a friend and colleague, all of which Jason denied.
Court further heard that Jason was the one who had to identify his mother’s body.
Jason’s best friend, Ian Manuel, also concluded his testimony and confirmed his version of events under cross-examination. His testimony corresponded with Jason’s account.
The matter will continue in the Pretoria Magistrates Court.
