A Horrific Brutal Murder of Santie Bothma in Rustenburg
The brutal murder of 54-year-old Santie Bothma has left communities across South Africa shocked and demanding justice.
On 4 May 2026 Santie Bothma was reported missing after leaving Sonskyn Retirement Village in Rustenburg. Her body was later discovered in the bushes near Dinie Estate Road on the 5th May 2026. Police reports indicate her throat had been slit.
Two suspects, Corné Engelbrecht (22) and Roelien Hattingh (34), were arrested and appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court. They face charges including, Murder, Robbery, Hijacking, Defeating the ends of justice.
The suspects remain in custody and are expected back in court on 1 June 2026 as investigations continue.

The three appeared at the Rustenburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 25 May Police on Saturday said that the 48-year-old taxi boss was shot multiple times while sitting in his vehicle. He was talking to two other people in his car when the shooting occurred. The suspects were caught after a member of the police’s mounted unit was working nearby and saw two suspects fleeing after the shots were fired. The police officer saw the suspects get into a white Suzuki car, which was waiting for them. “The suspects drove off with the vehicle, but were intercepted and arrested at the corner of Oliver Tambo and Bosch Streets in Rustenburg by mounted unit members, who were coordinated by their observant colleague,” the police said.
