A 46-year-old male suspect is scheduled to appear before the Cofimvaba Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, on allegations of raping a 71-year-old woman.
According to the victim, on 4 May 2026, at approximately 23:00, she was at her residence in Lokishini Locality, Mtshanyane Administration Area, Cofimvaba, when the suspect knocked on her door, claiming to be with her son. Believing that the suspect was accompanying her son, the victim opened the door.
Once inside the house, the suspect reportedly forced himself on the victim and raped her.
The victim’s son learned of the incident from his mother the following morning and immediately laid a complaint with the police.
The suspect, who is known to the victim, was apprehended by community members and handed over to the police. He will make his first court appearance on 6 May 2026.
The District Commissioner, Major General Rudolph Adolph, has highly commended the community’s joint effort to protect vulnerable elderly women. “The community is civil enough to know that mob justice is an offence; they should rather hand the suspect over to the police,” commented the General.
