Al Capone's involvement in the milk business was a strategic move to diversify his criminal empire after Prohibition ended. He aimed to capitalize on the lack of regulation in the dairy industry, which allowed him to buy milk in cheaper states like Wisconsin and bottle it in Chicago. This move not only provided him with a legal business but also allowed him to bypass local dairy pricing and union control. Capone's business practices led to the "Chicago Milk Wars," a conflict with the milk union that resulted in the Capones' control over the industry. Despite the criminal nature of his business, Capone's concern for food safety and the creation of expiration dates on milk bottles were significant factors in the industry's evolution.
While he was still a low-ranking gangster and bouncer at a bordello, Capone contracted syphilis. He chose to leave this disease untreated, which ultimately led to an untimely demise in 1947 at the age of just 48.
