Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested in connection with the assassination of a witness linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Julius Mkhwanazi, the suspended Deputy Chief of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), was arrested for his alleged involvement in the assassination of Marius van der Merwe, a witness who testified that Mkhwanazi ordered the cover-up of a police torture murder. This arrest follows a series of serious allegations against him, including corruption, abuse of power, irregular promotions, and links to criminal elements within the EMPD.

Background and Allegations
Mkhwanazi came under scrutiny after the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry revealed that he allegedly facilitated the registration of private vehicles belonging to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s security company as municipal assets, fitted with blue lights, and bypassed proper vetting procedures. He has also been implicated in multiple criminal activities, including theft, kidnapping, and being an accessory to murder.

Disciplinary Proceedings
Prior to his arrest, Mkhwanazi faced 13 charges of fraud, gross dishonesty, and gross negligence in a disciplinary hearing related to the blue-light vehicle saga and other irregularities within the EMPD. His attempts to halt the disciplinary process through the Labour Court were dismissed, allowing proceedings to continue.

Current Status
As of the latest reports, Mkhwanazi is in custody following his arrest for the assassination of a key witness, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigations into corruption and criminal activity within the EMPD. He continues to deny wrongdoing in other allegations and maintains that he will not go to jail for actions he claims he did not commit.
