How SA Fuel Prices Work
DMRE Sets the Price
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) announces new pump prices on the first Wednesday of every month. The price is regulated — every petrol station charges the same.
What Affects the Price
The oil price (Brent crude), the Rand/Dollar exchange rate, and the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) are the main drivers. Local levies make up about 35% of your pump price.
Inland vs Coastal
Inland prices are higher than coastal because of transport costs. Gauteng typically pays 60–75c more per litre than Cape Town or Durban.
95 vs 93 Petrol
95 octane is recommended for modern, turbocharged engines. 93 is suitable for older or naturally aspirated engines.
Diesel 50ppm vs 500ppm
50ppm is the cleaner, low-sulphur diesel required by newer Euro 5/6 engines. 500ppm is older grade. Most modern diesel vehicles require 50ppm.
Tax & Levies Breakdown
