The misuse of prescription medications in South Africa is a significant public health concern. It involves taking medication in a manner or dose other than prescribed, or using someone else's prescription. Commonly abused medications include opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants. The rise in prescription medication abuse is attributed to factors such as easy access to these drugs, lack of awareness about addiction risks, and misconceptions about their safety. This misuse can lead to severe health complications and addiction, affecting individuals across various demographics, including teenagers and young adults. The South African government has launched a new three-pillar substance abuse policy focusing on demand reduction, supply reduction, and harm reduction to address this issue.
