A 25-year-old man from De Aar in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his eleven-month-old child

A 25-year-old man from De Aar in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his eleven-month-old child. The incident occurred on Saturday, 30 November 2024.
Police were summoned to the scene at approximately 19:30 following reports that the accused was assaulting his girlfriend and toddler.
Upon arrival, officers found that the child had already been transported by ambulance to a local hospital in De Aar.
Tragically, the toddler was declared deceased upon arrival at the hospital. The suspect was subsequently arrested at the scene.
He remained in custody until his appearance in the Regional Court in Phillipstown, where he was found guilty and sentenced accordingly.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000).
The investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Heroldt Saunders of the Phillipstown Detective Unit, whose diligent work ensured that the perpetrator was brought to justice.
The District Commissioner of the Pixley ka Seme District, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended the investigating officer for the meticulous handling of the case. She issued a stern warning against acts of gender-based violence and femicide reiterating that these heinous are condemned and will not be tolerated in her district.
