South Africa exports petrol and diesel to neighboring countries primarily to meet regional energy needs and support its trade balance. Despite consuming more than it produces, the country relies heavily on imports, with approximately 70% of its crude oil requirements met through imports. This reliance exposes South Africa to global oil price fluctuations and exchange rate volatility, which can significantly impact local fuel prices. Additionally, the country's refineries, such as Sasol, play a critical role in producing synthetic fuels for export, showcasing its innovation in fuel production.
South Africa does not have the capability to produce its own petrol and diesel. The country is a net importer of fuel, relying on imports to meet its energy demands. While there are local refineries that produce fuel from imported crude oil, the majority of petrol and diesel is still sourced from abroad, with only a small portion produced locally.
