The Namakwa District Management welcomed the successful conviction and #sentencing in a domestic violence case investigated by the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
On 10 November 2025, the 29-year-old female victim was assaulted by her life partner, Jan De Wee (32), at her residence. The accused, while under the influence of alcohol, became aggressive and assaulted her. He later took her to his mother’s house, where a further confrontation occurred, before dragging her to a nearby field where he further assaulted her with a panga, causing multiple open wounds and bruises to her body.
The victim was later assisted by her cousin to contact the police and was thereafter taken to Fraserburg Hospital for medical treatment. The case was allocated to Detective Warrant Officer David Matthys, attached to the Calvinia FCS Unit, for further investigation.
On 14 April 2026, the accused was found guilty of Assault GBH (domestic violence-related) and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. In terms of Section 103(1)(g) of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
This conviction underscores SAPS’s commitment to protecting victims of gender-based violence and femicide and ensuring that perpetrators face the full might of the law.
