Oil reserves emergency stockpiles, also known as strategic petroleum reserves, are government-maintained emergency stockpiles of crude oil created to protect countries from sudden supply disruptions. These reserves are a crucial buffer against interruptions in global energy markets, helping governments stabilize markets and maintain fuel supplies when global energy flows are interrupted. The International Energy Agency (IEA) mandates that member countries keep at least 90 days' worth of oil imports in stock, acting as a safety measure during supply disruptions. The United States holds the world's largest strategic petroleum reserve, with about 415.4 million barrels of crude oil in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, supplemented by 439.3 million barrels held as commercial reserves by private companies. Japan also maintains one of the largest oil stockpiles in the world, with about 260 million barrels of crude oil in government reserves.

Strategic petroleum reserves (SPRs) are government-maintained emergency stockpiles of crude oil created to protect countries from sudden supply disruptions. These reserves are typically stored in large underground caverns, storage tanks, or dedicated facilities and can be released into the market when normal oil supplies are threatened. The concept gained prominence after the 1973 Oil Crisis, when an embargo by oil-producing countries caused severe shortages and soaring prices worldwide. Today, countries maintain SPRs as a buffer against volatility in the global energy market. The US, China, and Japan are among the countries with significant SPRs, with the US having the largest SPR, followed by China and Japan. The coordinated release of these reserves is a response to global oil supply disruptions, such as geopolitical crises or natural disasters.
