The South African Police Service (SAPS) Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Kariega in the Eastern Cape, has welcomed the successful conclusion of the case involving the brutal murder and rape of eight-year-old Veronique May, whose body was discovered in Kamesh in October 2025.
The accused, Lelethu Nkosana (27), was found guilty and sentenced in the High Court, Gqeberha, on Monday, 17 August 2026. Nkosana was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for housebreaking, life imprisonment for rape and life imprisonment for murder. The sentences will run concurrently. His name will also be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The case emanated from the disappearance of an eight-year-old Veronique, who was reported missing by her family at SAPS Kamesh on Sunday, 05 October 2025. A police search was immediately launched, and information was obtained regarding the person with whom the child was last seen. Police located the suspect and following questioning, he led the investigating officer to premises in De Booi Street, Langa, on Monday, 06 October 2025, where the child's lifeless body was discovered in one of the rooms.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged. Following a thorough investigation and subsequent court proceedings, he was found guilty and sentenced.
The Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating team, under the leadership of Warrant Officer Mbulelo Grootboom, for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that justice was served.
“The loss of a child is devastating, and this sentence demonstrates that SAPS will continue to pursue perpetrators of crimes against children and ensure that they are held accountable,” said Brig Ngalo.
The SAPS continues to urge communities to remain vigilant and protect children by reporting any suspicious behaviour or information relating to crimes against children to the police.
