Private security companies compared to the South African police services
The private security industry in South Africa is the largest in the world, with over 2.5 million registered security guards and more than 10,380 registered companies. This is significantly more than the combined personnel of the South African Police Service and South African Army. The private security sector outnumbers the official police force by more than three to one, with approximately 564,000 active security officers compared to around 179,000 SAPS personnel. This disparity highlights the growing reliance on private security services in South Africa, driven by high crime rates, economic disparities, and the need for advanced security technology.

The matter stems from events that unfolded in the early hours of 17 December 2022. The accused was involved in a motor vehicle collision with Joshua Rock.
