Suspended For Vaping/Teenager Ends His Life: Esselen - KZN
A sixteen (16) year old boy has ended his life in an outbuilding at his home in Esselen Crescent in Esselen - KZN.
He was discovered by his mother this morning (Wednesday) who with assistance broke down the door to find his lifeless body.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to the home in Unit 13 in Phoenix - KZN at approximately 11:15.
Reaction Officers were informed by the family that the teenager was a grade ten (10) pupil at Crystal Point Secondary in KZN and had recently been suspended from school after he was found vaping. The child returned to school briefly after the suspension but became depressed and refused to attend classes. Yesterday (Tuesday) he left home at approximately 15:00, appearing upset and failed to return.
His mother noticed a figure in the outbuilding this morning whilst conducting household chores & he was found unresponsive when they forced open the door.

DANGERS OF VAPING:
Vaping poses serious risks to teenagers, including nicotine addiction, impaired brain development, lung damage, cardiovascular problems, and increased likelihood of future substance use.
Nicotine Addiction and Brain Development
Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and particularly harmful to adolescent brains, which continue developing until around age 25. Nicotine exposure can impair attention, learning, memory, mood regulation, and impulse control, and it increases vulnerability to future substance abuse

Teen brains respond more intensely to nicotine, creating a higher risk of lifelong dependence

Respiratory and Lung Health
Vaping introduces harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, diacetyl, and heavy metals into the lungs. These substances can cause chronic coughing, bronchitis, asthma flare-ups, and EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury). Severe cases have led to ICU admissions, lung collapse, and long-term respiratory impairment

Flavored aerosols, like diacetyl, can damage airway cells and lead to scarring and reduced lung function

Cardiovascular Risks
Nicotine and other chemicals in e-cigarettes can increase heart rate, blood pressure, and arterial stiffness, potentially leading to long-term cardiovascular disease. Vaping also promotes platelet activation and oxidative stress, which may contribute to heart problems over time

Mental Health Impacts
Vaping is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and mood disorders in teens. Nicotine disrupts the brain’s reward system, creating a cycle of temporary relief followed by withdrawal-induced irritability and restlessness, which can exacerbate mental health issues

Gateway to Other Substances
Teens who vape are 2–4 times more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes and may be more prone to experimenting with other substances. Early nicotine exposure can condition the brain to seek additional addictive substances

Physical and Performance Effects
Vaping can reduce exercise capacity and oxygen utilization, leading to fatigue and decreased athletic performance. It also contributes to sleep disturbances, irritability, and concentration problems, which can affect academic performance and daily functioning

Social and Behavioral Factors
Teen vaping is often influenced by peer pressure, social media, and flavored products. Marketing strategies target youth with appealing flavors and sleek designs, making vaping seem harmless and trendy

Prevention and Support
Education and Awareness: Schools and parents should provide accurate information about the risks of vaping and nicotine addiction

Parental Involvement: Open, nonjudgmental conversations and monitoring of teen activities can reduce initiation

Policy Measures: Enforcing age restrictions, banning flavored e-liquids, and regulating sales can limit youth access

Cessation Support: Programs like text-based quit services and counseling can help teens stop vaping safely

In summary, vaping is not a safe alternative to smoking for teenagers. It carries immediate and long-term risks to brain development, lung and heart health, mental wellbeing, and increases the likelihood of future substance use. Awareness, education, and supportive interventions are critical to protecting youth from these dangers.
