Report a missing person immediately at your nearest police station

Report a missing person immediately at your nearest police station or through the Bureau for Missing Persons; there is no waiting period.

Immediate Steps
Go to the nearest police station as soon as you realize someone is missing. You do not need to wait 24 hours before reporting

Bring a recent photograph of the missing person to help the police identify them quickly and enter their details into the National Bureau for Missing Persons database

Provide detailed information including:
Full name and date of birth
Physical description: height, weight, hair and eye color, distinguishing marks (scars, tattoos, birthmarks)
Last known location and time
Clothing worn when last seen
Any relevant circumstances or contacts who may have information

Forms and Documentation
Complete the SAPS 55 (A) form, which authorizes the police to circulate the missing person’s details and protects against hoax reports

If the person is later found or returns, complete a SAPS 92 form to update the Bureau of Missing Persons and remove the case from circulation

Investigation and Follow-Up
An investigating officer or detective will be assigned to the case. Obtain their name and contact details to provide updates or new information

Keep in regular contact with the officer and report any sightings or leads immediately.
Additional Measures
Use social media responsibly: Share the missing person’s photo, description, last known location, and police contact details to widen the search network

Community awareness: Inform local groups or organizations such as Missing Children South Africa to increase visibility.
Foreign nationals can also report missing persons through local police or their embassy/consulate for guidance and support

Important Considerations
Vulnerable individuals (children, elderly, or persons with mental health conditions) require urgent reporting as immediate action can be life-saving

Always ask for a case number or reference number to ensure your report is officially recorded and can be tracked

By following these steps promptly and providing accurate information, you maximize the chances of locating the missing person safely and efficiently.
