 Janitha Van Reenen has been denied bail after being deemed a flight risk. She faces fraud charges in connection with a R16 million fleet procurement scandal at the Emfuleni Municipality. The court ruled that releasing her would be a miscarriage of justice, as she allegedly knew about the murder of Martha Mani Rantsofu and possesses information regarding the identity of the killers.


Martha Mani Rantsofu was a municipal official at Emfuleni Local Municipality, where she worked as an acting accountant. Her role involved handling municipal accounts and debts. Rantsofu was shot dead on March 30, 2026, in Vanderbijlpark, near a police station. The incident was captured on CCTV and went viral on social media. The South African Police Service (SAPS) Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) is investigating the murder, with no motive yet determined. Rantsofu had previously expressed concerns about her safety and had raised alarms about corruption linked to tenders. Her death has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability.
