JOHANNESBURG – Former nurse Sithembile Xulu and her accomplice, Simon Mogale, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Busisiwe Nxumalo in a plot to cash in on approximately R6 million in life and funeral insurance policies.
The Gauteng High Court found that Xulu orchestrated the murder of her relative after taking out multiple insurance policies in Nxumalo's name and naming herself as the beneficiary. Prosecutors successfully argued that the killing was motivated by financial gain.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Nxumalo had moved to Johannesburg from KwaZulu-Natal before she was murdered. Her body was later discovered in Lenasia South.
Mogale was found to have carried out the killing at Xulu's instruction, with the court concluding that Xulu was the mastermind behind the murder-for-insurance scheme.
The court imposed life sentences on both Xulu and Mogale, bringing to a close a case that has shocked many South Africans and highlighted the dangers of insurance-related fraud and violent crime.
