The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the rape of a 22-month-old toddler reported in Maphophe Village, under Saselamani policing area, Vhembe District, on Tuesday, 06 May 2026.
According to information received, the mother of the toddler woke up on the morning of 06 May 2026 and noticed that her child was unable to stand. Upon further examination, she observed that the victim's left knee was swollen. The mother immediately transported the child to a local hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that the toddler had been sexually assaulted.
A case of rape was subsequently opened at Saselamani Police Station and has since been transferred to the Giyani Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for specialised investigation. The suspect remains unknown at this stage.
Lieutenant General Hadebe described the incident as deeply disturbing and immoral, noting with grave concern that it occurred just days after the official launch of Child Protection Month.
"This is a shocking and heart-breaking crime. A baby of 22 months cannot speak for herself, and it is our duty to speak for her through action. Child Protection Month was launched to remind us all that children must be kept safe and yet here we are. I want to send a clear message: we will find the person responsible and we will ensure that justice is served. I am calling on anyone in that community who knows something to please come forward. Do it for that little girl," said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
