US officials are warning that Mexican cartels may be expanding their operations across Africa, including South Africa, with growing concerns about their involvement in both trafficking and local drug production.
US Africa Command head General Dagvin Anderson told lawmakers that cartel-linked activity in Africa is becoming more sophisticated, with emerging links to terrorist groups and increased cooperation in moving drugs.
Investigative journalist Caryn Dolley says the trend now includes manufacturing operations, not just transit routes, with several large drug labs uncovered in South Africa since 2024 in provinces such as Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and North West.
Authorities previously linked a major R2 billion drug lab bust in Limpopo to possible cartel activity, raising concerns that South Africa is increasingly becoming a production hub as well as a transit route for synthetic drugs like crystal meth.
