Good Morning Monday 11 May 2026
WE ARE WATCHING YOU EAST RAND.
Hantavirus WTF?

The weather in East Rand, Gauteng on Monday, May 11, 2026, is expected to be generally clear with temperatures ranging from a low of 7°C to 21°C. Winds are expected to be from the south-southwest at 10 to 15 km/h.
Sunset is at 17:30 PM.

Hantavirus is not endemic to South Africa, meaning it is not commonly found in the region. Recent cases have been linked to infected rodents, but the overall risk remains low for the local population. While there was a recent outbreak linked to a cruise ship, health authorities have confirmed that the local risk is limited, and there is no need for widespread panic or travel restrictions.

The MV Hondius cruise ship has experienced a hantavirus outbreak, with eight confirmed or suspected cases, including three deaths, linked to the Andes virus strain, which can rarely spread between humans.
Overview of the Outbreak
The outbreak began during a cruise departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, with stops in Antarctica and remote South Atlantic islands. The first known cases involved a Dutch couple who likely contracted the virus during a birdwatching trip in Argentina, possibly exposed to rodents carrying the Andes virus. The couple died in South Africa after disembarking, and subsequent cases have been identified among passengers and crew aboard the MV Hondius and in countries where they returned, including the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK

Virus Details
Hantaviruses are zoonotic viruses typically transmitted from rodents to humans through contact with urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated surfaces. The Andes virus, responsible for this outbreak, is unique among hantaviruses because it can occasionally transmit from person to person through close, prolonged contact, such as between family members or caregivers

.Unlike airborne viruses like COVID-19, hantavirus does not spread easily through casual contact or respiratory droplets.

Symptoms and Incubation
Early symptoms resemble flu, including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Severe cases can progress to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), causing coughing, shortness of breath, and respiratory failure. Symptoms typically appear 1–8 weeks after exposure, with some reports up to 40 days

.The case fatality rate for HPS can be high, around 40% in severe cases.

Current Cases and Fatalities
As of May 8, 2026, there are five confirmed cases and three suspected cases among passengers and crew. Three deaths have been reported: a Dutch couple and a German passenger. Several other individuals have been hospitalized or evacuated for treatment in the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, and Switzerland

A new suspected case has been reported in a British national on Tristan da Cunha

Public Health Response
The World Health Organization (WHO) and national health authorities are coordinating an international response. Measures include:

Evacuating and medically assessing passengers in the Canary Islands and other ports

Contact tracing and monitoring individuals who disembarked at St. Helena and other stops

Isolating symptomatic individuals and providing supportive care, including respiratory support if needed

Deploying diagnostic kits and epidemiologists to strengthen testing and containment

The WHO has assessed the public health risk as low, emphasizing that the virus spreads only through close contact and is not highly contagious like COVID-19

Prevention and Treatment
There is currently no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for the Andes strain. Prevention focuses on avoiding contact with rodents and infected individuals. Supportive care, including hospitalization and mechanical ventilation, is the main treatment for severe cases

The outbreak is serious but contained, with limited human-to-human transmission.
Passengers remaining on the ship are being monitored, and no new symptomatic cases have been reported on board

The Andes virus is rare, and the risk to the general public remains low.
Authorities are taking extensive measures to prevent further spread, including isolation, testing, and careful disembarkation procedures
