#SAPS Free State is appealing to the public to identify and locate two persons of interest who may assist in the investigation of a daring business robbery at a prominent chain store in the Ladybrand border town.
A 43-year-old police officer has already been taken into custody in connection with the incident, while four additional suspects remain at large. On Thursday, 9 April 2026, at approximately 18:40, SAPS members were summoned to a robbery in progress at a local chainstore. Preliminary reports indicate that two unknown males entered the store and approached the branch manager.
One suspect was dressed in a police reflective jacket, and the other carried a formal docket cover. Under the guise of investigating a fictitious assault case, the suspects gained access to the manager’s office to "review camera footage."
Once inside the office, the suspects dropped their disguise. The manager was struck in the neck with a firearm, and the cash office clerk was forced to open the safe. The suspects made off with large plastic bags containing an undisclosed, substantial amount of cash and several cellular phones.
A single gunshot was heard outside the premises as the suspects fled the scene. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during the incident.
Following a swift tactical response by Ladybrand SAPS and the K9 Unit, a white Volkswagen Polo used as the getaway vehicle was discovered abandoned on Loop Street. Upon inspection, it was found that the vehicle’s registration plates did not match the license disc.
During the processing of the scene, a 43-year-old male was intercepted and interrogated. The individual was identified as an SAPS member attached to a station within the Free State. Further profiling revealed the officer has a prior criminal record, having been previously arrested for kidnapping and #extortion.
The suspect has been detained and faces charges of business robbery and other related offenses. The case has been officially handed over to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime, Murder and Robbery Unit for specialised investigation.
Police are appealing to anyone with information regarding the two persons of interest appearing on the image to contact Detective Ntingi Mshumpela at 076 423 5295, call the #CrimeStop number at 08600 10111, or submit an anonymous tip-off via the #MySAPSApp.All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
