Nicolás Maduro is a Venezuelan politician and former union leader who has served as the de jure president of Venezuela since 2013.
Nicolás Maduro Moros was born on November 23, 1962, in Caracas, Venezuela, into a working-class family; his father was a trade union leader, which influenced Maduro’s early political engagement.

He began his career as a bus driver and later became a trade union leader, eventually entering politics through labor activism.
Maduro joined the Socialist League of Venezuela in the 1980s and received political training in Cuba before rising through the ranks of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Political Career
Maduro served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2012 and as Vice President under Hugo Chávez from 2012 until Chávez’s death in 2013.
Following Chávez’s death, Maduro won the 2013 special presidential election, becoming the 53rd president of Venezuela.

He was reelected in 2018 and claimed victory in 2024, though these elections were widely disputed by opposition groups and several foreign governments.

During his presidency, Maduro increasingly ruled by decree and relied on the Supreme Tribunal, National Electoral Council, and military support to maintain power, especially after the opposition-led National Assembly was elected in 2015.
His tenure has been marked by economic collapse, hyperinflation, shortages, and widespread protests, with significant emigration of Venezuelans and allegations of human rights abuses.

Recent Events
On January 3, 2026, Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by U.S. forces and transported to the United States, facing charges including drug trafficking, narco-terrorism, and possession of weapons.
Despite this, the Venezuelan government and interim president Delcy Rodríguez maintain that Maduro remains the de jure president.

Personal Life
Maduro married Cilia Flores in 2013, who has been a prominent political figure in her own right, serving as attorney general and in the National Assembly Encyclopedia Britannica.
Maduro is known for his support of chavismo, the socialist political ideology established by Hugo Chávez, and has relied on international allies such as China, Cuba, and Russia to sustain his government.

In summary, Nicolás Maduro is a long-standing Venezuelan leader whose career spans from labor activism to the presidency, marked by authoritarian governance, economic crisis, and international controversy, culminating in his recent capture by U.S. authorities.
