The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is projected to recruit between 25 000 and 30 000 personnel over the next 10 years, as the military focuses on replacing personnel who retire or leave rather than significantly expanding the overall size of the force.Under financial constraints, the SANDF is expected to maintain an active force ceiling of approximately 59 000 to 68 000 personnel. This means recruitment will largely follow a “one-in, one-out” approach, with new recruits filling vacancies created by retirements and other departures. The Military Skills Development System (MSDS) remains the primary entry route for new recruits. Under the projected model, major intakes would take place every two years, with a standard intake of around 5 000 recruits.
